2024 Week 10 - Language

I know that the Kludt/Ahrendt/Reisner families spoke German as I have the family Bible that was given to William & Susan when they got married.  It was written in German and they wrote the names of their children in German.  However, it appears that they no longer spoke German or acknowledged their German heritage sometime in the 1930’s.

Sometimes I wished that I had taken German as a foreign language in high school.  However, I took up Spanish.  Of course, I haven’t used it in a very long time.  Whereas German would have been useful in my family research.

My son took Japanese in high school for his foreign language.  His reasoning was because of computer gaming.  And he was in Japan during his military time for a brief period.  Had no need to use the language (besides had forgotten most of it by then).

Veteran Ancestors

In honor of Veteran's Day, I will take a look at my ancestors who have fought in various wars for our Nation's freedoms.

Hmmm . . . thought this would be easy.  I'm not finding much at the moment.  There are possibles with the Civil War (both sides) but I don't have definitive proof.

I know that my Porter family was involved with the Virginia Militia before the Revolutionary War because that is how I got my membership in the Daughters of the American Colonists.

Daniel Brown, private in the 124th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War.  In 1863, he was 40 years old, married, and a farmer.  Daniel is my 3rd great grandfather on my mother's side of the family.  He died in September 1863 due to illness contracted during his service.  His wife filed for pension.  Lots of good information in that pension file including marriage certificate and listing of children including birth dates and places.

Thomas Stead, private in  Company H, 9th New York Heavy Artillery during the Civil War.  Thomas is my 2nd great grandfather on my mother's side.  Haven't been able to track down the actual pension record online.

James Frazer fought in the Revolutionary War.  There are muster rolls but I'm not able to determine if it is the same James Frazier.

Garland Hurt fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy.

Moses Hurt, Garland's father,  fought in the Revolutionary War.

As I do more in-depth research on various surnames, I will be able to add to this list.

Ulerich family - Part 1 Henry Ulerich & his children

This is an update to an earlier blog posting.  I've learned more about the family and have pictures as well as documents.  The   Ulerich family came from Germany.  As of today, I do not have the immigrant ancestor.  But I do know that they lived in Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Washington State.  Ulerich was my mother-in-law's maiden name.  Bolded, underlined names are her direct line.  Majority of the information below is from Federal Census records.

The Ulerich name has several spellings (depending on the census taker, etc).  Spelling variations include Ullerich, Ulrich, Ulerick, Ulerich, Allerich, etc.

I was going to do this as one entry but have decided to split it up.

Henry Ulerich was born 16 Oct 1828 in Pennsylvania.  He married Caroline Fry and they had 10 children per Census records.  Henry passed away 30 Dec 1914 in Cass County, Indiana.

    • Mary or May
    • Frank

In 1870, Henry & his family lived in Logansport, Clay Township, Cass County, Indiana.  He was a farmer.  His mother was foreign born.  He cannot read or write.  John was a plasterer.  There is an Ann D. Ulerich living with the family, age 84, and born in Baden and cannot write.  Assumption is that this is Henry's mother.

In 1880, Henry was in Bethlehem Township, Cass County, Indiana.  He is still a farmer and still cannot read or write.  Both parents are listed as being born in Germany.  Eva is the oldest still living at home and has been unemployed for 6 months.  Benjamin has been unemployed for 3 months.  Living next door to him (in 1880) is his son, Henry.  Henry's wife is Martha (age 19, born in Indiana).  Also living with him is his daughter, Lily M (age 1, born in Indiana),  Elizabeth Stringer (age 50, widowed, born in Indiana - I assume this may be Martha's mother), her son, Joseph B (age 15, born in Indiana) and her daughter, Nancy J (age 13, born in Indiana).  Henry is listed as a farm laborer.

In 1900, Henry lived with a second wife, Elizabeth, in Bethlehem Township, Cass County, Indiana.  He's listed as a farmer.  Cannot read or write.

In 1910, Henry lived alone in Bethlehem Township, Cass County, Indiana.  Evidently, by this time he can read and write.

October Birthdays & Anniversaries

A perfect topic for this week . . . We have several birthdays this month in my husband's family.  A niece, Megan Smith Collier and her two children plus two more grand-nephews from another niece.  Here's the kicker . . . 3 of them share the same day of the month.

But we are to talk about my ancestors . . .

The earliest ancestor to have a birthday in October is Eleanor De Bohun, daughter of Humphre de Bohun and Elizabeth Plantagent, and the wife of James Boteler.  She was born on the 17th of October 1304 and died the 7th of October 1363.  One of the records indicates that her marriage to James took place in October as well.  Her oldest, James Boteler, was also born in October at Kilkenny Castle on the 4th in 1331.  He died on the 18th of October 1382 at Knocktopher Castle.

Joseph Allein & Theodoshia Alleine were married on 4th Oct 1655 in Ditcheat, Somerset, England.  Joseph was born in 1633 in Devizes, Wiltshire, England to Toby Alleine.  Theodoshia was born in either 1616 or 1630 in Ditcheat, Somerset, England to Richard Alleine.  Their daughter, Isabella, married Rev. John Rutherford in the month of October.  Isabella was born in 1655 in Ditcheat, Somerset, England and died in 1740 in Ireland.  John Rutherford was born in 1653 in Morebattle, Roxburghshire, Scotland and died in County Down, Ireland.

Thornburg Mabbit was born on 28th Oct 1799 in Maryland.  Parents are unknown.  He died 9 March 1870 in Madison County, Indiana.  He married Susannah Smith 6th of June 1822 in Wayne County, Indiana.  I descend through their daughter, Elizabeth, who married Christopher Columbus Maynard.  I have conflicting information in regards to birth dates, etc.  I have the same dates for both Thornburg & Elizabeth.  One of them has to be wrong.

Moses Stanley and Ellen Lowe were married 29th of October 1822 in Patrick Co, Virginia.  Ellen was born 4th of May 1803 in Patrick Co, Virginia to Aaron Lowe & Sarah Frazier.  Moses was born 2 of May 1800 in Franklin Co, Virginia to William Stanley and Nancy Mullins.

Documented Sources:

  • ·       1840 Pike County Kentucky census, page 279

  • ·       1850 Pike County Kentucky Census, Dwelling/Family #795, William is 64 years old, born in Virginia, cannot read or write, and is a farmer.  Living with him is his wife Elizabeth, age 63.  She was also born in Virginia and cannot read or write.

#23 William Hurt (Sr)

William is my 10th great grandfather.  He was born circa 1627 to Thomas Hurt and Martha Winston in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England.  He died circa 1704 in King William County, Virginia.

It is possible that he was one of 25 immigrants brought over from England to Virginia Colony in 1650 by Steven Hamlin.  He was living in St Stephens Parish in King William County, Virginia on the 12th of November 1691.

He married a Margaret and they had at least three children:  John, William, and Isabella.

#22 Thomas Cains

Thomas is my 5th great grandfather.  Thomas was born circa 1787 in Somerset, Pennsylvania.  He died 9 Sept 1852 in Blaine, Lawrence County, Kentucky.  He was married to Candace Borders.

I found him and his wife in the 1850 Federal Census in Lawrence County, Kentucky.

I descend from his son Andrew Jackson Caines.

Need the following information:

  1.              Parents Names
  2.     Siblings
  3.     Other Children

#21 - Henry Lowe

Immigrant 9th Great grandfather, Henry was born in 1639 in Denby, Derbyshire, England.  He immigrated to Maryland Colonies in 1674.  He married Susanna Maria Benett.  He passed away in 1717 in St Mary’s, Maryland.

It would be neat if I can tie this in to become another Patriot for the Daughters of the American Colonists.  Some family trees (not confirmed) reflect that he is a Colonel.

I descend from his son, Samuel Lowe Sr. (now I need to confirm this as most records I see don’t list a Samuel as a son).

52 Ancestors #20 – Andreas Hans August Pflughaupt

What a name!  Andreas is my 4th great grandfather on my father’s side of the family tree.  I don’t have a whole lot of information on Andreas except that he married Anna Oldach on the 22nd of June 1792 in Mecklenburg, Germany and they had at least 3 children that I could find when my aunt & I were researching the German Church Records at a local Family History Center.

Using Family Search, I was able to add an additional child.

#19 - Lavina Morgan

Not much is known about Lavina (my paternal great-great grandmother).  She was born 18 May 1841 in Kentucky and died in April 1918 in Wendell, Gooding County, Idaho.  She married Charles Warren Davis on 22 Dec 1869 in Cass County, Illinois (Source:  http://www.ilsos.gov/isavital/marriageSearch.do)

Looks like I will need to send off for a copy of the marriage record to see if parental information is provided for both parties.

#16 - Christian Ahrend (t) (s)

Another of my 3rd greats.  I don’t have a lot of information on Christian except that he was born circa 1798 and that he married a Maria.  I do know that there are at least 3 children, all born in Mecklenburg, Germany.

I have Chr., Maria, Dorothea, Joh., and Wilhelmina Ahrends listed on a New York Passenger list.  Indicates his occupation is farmer.  Unfortunately, I don’t know the ship but can estimate the year as Dorothea was 17 and she was born in 1836.  So that makes the immigration year to be approximately 1853.

#15 Sarah Elizabeth Sparr (Spawr)

Sarah is my 3rd Great Grandmother.  She was born 17 Nov 1826 in Ohio.  She married Joshua Swinehart on the 8th of January 1846 in Wyandot County, Ohio.  She died 29th Aug 1895 in Noble County, Indiana.

According to Alvord’s History of Noble County, Indiana, the Swineharts moved to Noble County in October 1847.  Although the 1850 Census still has them in Ohio.

Resources to validate the above information:

I would like to find out who Sarah’s parents are and if she had any siblings.

#14 - Daniel Brown

Daniel Brown is my 3rd great grandfather on my mother’s side.

Daniel was born circa 1819 in England and died 18th of September 1863.  He was married to Ann Barge.  Daniel and Ann had at least 4 children – Esther, Arabella, William & Edwin.

I have the following documentation:

1860 – page 74, Dundee, Township of Dundee, Kane County, Illinois.  Daniel is identified as a painter.  Lists entire family.

Assumptions – Since the girls were born in Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey in 1850 and 1854, Daniel & Ann either met and married there or in England and immigrated at that time.  Need to locate the following information:

New Jersey State Census 1855
New Jersey Federal Census 1850
Marriage record of Daniel & Ann
Immigration record for Daniel & Ann

#11 - Christopher Columbus Maynard

Known facts about Christopher –

·        Born in 1750 in North Carolina
·        3 Children – Christopher “One-Eyed Kitty”, Nancy & James
·        Wife’s name may be Elizabeth Greenstreet

Some people have his wife as Elizabeth Jenny Greenstreet.  Others indicate his mother is Jenny Greenstreet.  However, I haven’t seen documented sources to indicate which is true.

Found a copy of some old minutes of the Roaring River Baptist Church in Wilkes County, NC that references a Christopher Maynard, Gibson Maynard & a James Maynard in the 1790’s.  This may be this family.

My only source of information on Christopher comes from Roland B. Maynard’s book, The Maynards of East Kentucky: From Pioneers to the Tenth Generation.
