Military

           I have lots of veterans in my family.  I’ve written about some of them.  Last year we had a prompt entitled “War”.  Within that blog entry are links to the American Revolution and Civil War.  I have another blog entry entitled “Family Veterans” which has a link to an earlier post on the same topic.

I recently joined Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War using my ancestor Thomas Stead.  I referenced him briefly in the post on Veteran Ancestors in 2016.  He enlisted as a private on 16^th of August 1862 and served in the company of Capt J W Jewhursts, Regiment #9 from New York as heavy artillery.  His service ended (via telegram) on 6 July 1865 (160 years ago!) as a corporal.

Thomas was born 7 January 1847 in England to James Stead and Mary Ann Tolson.  The family immigrated to the United States when he was very young (age 0-3). They initially settled in Seneca Falls, Seneca County, New York.  Sometime between 1860 and 1870 the family moved to Dundee, Kane County, Illinois.  Thomas married Arabella Brown, daughter of Daniel Brown and Ann Barge,  on 1^st July 1873 in Kane County, Illinois.  He died 5^th of October 1910 in Dundee, Kane Co, Illinois.  Thomas and Arabella had five children.

         I could submit a supplemental on Arabella’s father, Daniel.  He was a private in the 124^th Illinois Infantry as of July 1863.  Another record indicates that he was in Company D of the 52^nd Illinois infantry.  Daniel was born in England circa 1819 and died 18^th of September 1863.  He married Ann Barge on the 14^th of August 1852 in Red Bank, Monmouth Co, New Jersey and they had a total of five children.

Family Veterans

This is a follow-up to an earlier blog post on family veterans.

I've recently applied for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution.   I'm using my ancestor Thomas Pinson.  He provided supplies.  I really wanted to use my ancestor George Belcher, who actually did serve in the Revolutionary War.

A year later, I'm now submitting a supplemental application for Patrick Porter.  Yay!  He actually served under Capt. Joseph Martin in Virginia.  He was also a juryman, commissioner of taxes, and furnished supplies.  His son, Samuel, also an ancestor, also qualifies as a soldier serving under Capt. Joseph Martin and Col. Evan Shelby.

Another ancestor that I qualify to submit a supplemental is James Alley.  He was a juror in 1779, a constable in 1780, and furnished supplies.

I am also looking at Moses Hurt (Sr), Crispin Shelton,  and Josiah Fugate.

Veteran Ancestors

In honor of Veteran's Day, I will take a look at my ancestors who have fought in various wars for our Nation's freedoms.

Hmmm . . . thought this would be easy.  I'm not finding much at the moment.  There are possibles with the Civil War (both sides) but I don't have definitive proof.

I know that my Porter family was involved with the Virginia Militia before the Revolutionary War because that is how I got my membership in the Daughters of the American Colonists.

Daniel Brown, private in the 124th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War.  In 1863, he was 40 years old, married, and a farmer.  Daniel is my 3rd great grandfather on my mother's side of the family.  He died in September 1863 due to illness contracted during his service.  His wife filed for pension.  Lots of good information in that pension file including marriage certificate and listing of children including birth dates and places.

Thomas Stead, private in  Company H, 9th New York Heavy Artillery during the Civil War.  Thomas is my 2nd great grandfather on my mother's side.  Haven't been able to track down the actual pension record online.

James Frazer fought in the Revolutionary War.  There are muster rolls but I'm not able to determine if it is the same James Frazier.

Garland Hurt fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy.

Moses Hurt, Garland's father,  fought in the Revolutionary War.

As I do more in-depth research on various surnames, I will be able to add to this list.
