Our Caribbean Cruise Vacation - Part 3 Puerto Rico

Tuesday, November 3, 2015 - first port of call

We got up early today (6 am) in order to eat breakfast before going ashore for our tour.  We ported in Old San Juan.  Loaded up into our tour bus for a drive to the El Yunque Rainforest.  Our driver's name is Alejandro.

Our first stop was at the Welcome Center.  Took lots of pictures of the plants and trees.

We then loaded up and went to our next stop, Coco Falls.

Our third stop was at the Mameyes River.  Got to see our first gecko.

Our last stop was at a gift shop along the route before heading back to the ship.

During the afternoon, David went back into town to the local Harley Shop to get his souvenir t-shirt.  I stayed back at the ship to unwind.

Shipboard activity included Name that TV Show trivia quiz and a Country Western music show with Patti & Jose.

Our Caribbean Cruise Vacation - Part 2 Sea Days before Puerto Rico

Promenade deck Poolside
We boarded the cruise ship on Friday, October 30th mid-day.  We spent the afternoon familiarizing ourselves with the ship.  We ate lunch (and dinner) at the Garden Cafe (buffet meals).  The activities included a mandatory boat drill - did you know our muster station was not on deck but in the Stardust Theater?  We had participated in the Sail-Away party then took in our first show in the Stardust - it was a preview of all the shows that would be performing during the 14 days on board.

Gatsby Lounge
The next three days were all at sea as we cruised towards Puerto Rico.  Breakfast was spent at the Garden Cafe (almost every day).  We took in a presentation on the various excursions available and then booked ours (one tour for each of the ports of calls).  Participated in Bingo in the Spinnaker Lounge and watched various music shows in Gatsby's Lounge.

David found his beer at Bimini Bar!
Day 2 at sea had us eating lunch at The Bimini Bar (it overlooked the pool deck) and dinner was in one of the formal dining rooms - The Aqua.  Since the cruise was our 30th anniversary gift to ourselves, we had a special dessert served to us by the wait staff (they were singing "Darling call me Sweetheart, I'm in love with you").  We also had our formal photos taken.  Day 3 at sea had us eating lunch poolside at the BBQ and dinner was at The Venetian (one of the other free formal dining rooms).  When we retired to our stateroom in the evenings, we were greeted with various towel animals.

Look what we found on our bed!

Ulerich family - Part 1 Henry Ulerich & his children

This is an update to an earlier blog posting.  I've learned more about the family and have pictures as well as documents.  The   Ulerich family came from Germany.  As of today, I do not have the immigrant ancestor.  But I do know that they lived in Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Washington State.  Ulerich was my mother-in-law's maiden name.  Bolded, underlined names are her direct line.  Majority of the information below is from Federal Census records.

The Ulerich name has several spellings (depending on the census taker, etc).  Spelling variations include Ullerich, Ulrich, Ulerick, Ulerich, Allerich, etc.

I was going to do this as one entry but have decided to split it up.

Henry Ulerich was born 16 Oct 1828 in Pennsylvania.  He married Caroline Fry and they had 10 children per Census records.  Henry passed away 30 Dec 1914 in Cass County, Indiana.

  1. John Daniel Ulerich, born Oct 1851 in Pennsylvania (more on a later blog entry)

    • Hugh Edgar Ulerich, b 19 Apr 1886 in Cass County, Indiana.  He died July 1968.  He married Leta Ingmire on 22 Feb 1911 in Cass County, Indiana.  It appears no children were born to this union.
    • Harold Clay Ulerich, b 23 May 1904 in Cass County, Indiana.  He died in 1952.  Married Violet Marie Mason on 1 Sept 1923 in Fulton County, Indiana.  They had 3 children.

    • Lily M born c1879 in Indiana. Married Thomas Newport in 1900.  She had died before the 1910 census as Thomas is listed as a widower and still living with Henry.  Children:
      • Orval Glen Newport, b c 1901 in Indiana
      • Flossil Newport, b c 1905 in Indiana
  4. Eva A Ulerich, born Oct 1857 in Pennsylvania.  She died in 1932.  She married Nathaniel Tilton on 14 Mar 1883 in Cass County, Indiana.  They had 2 children.

    • Mary or May
    • Frank

In 1870, Henry & his family lived in Logansport, Clay Township, Cass County, Indiana.  He was a farmer.  His mother was foreign born.  He cannot read or write.  John was a plasterer.  There is an Ann D. Ulerich living with the family, age 84, and born in Baden and cannot write.  Assumption is that this is Henry's mother.

In 1880, Henry was in Bethlehem Township, Cass County, Indiana.  He is still a farmer and still cannot read or write.  Both parents are listed as being born in Germany.  Eva is the oldest still living at home and has been unemployed for 6 months.  Benjamin has been unemployed for 3 months.  Living next door to him (in 1880) is his son, Henry.  Henry's wife is Martha (age 19, born in Indiana).  Also living with him is his daughter, Lily M (age 1, born in Indiana),  Elizabeth Stringer (age 50, widowed, born in Indiana - I assume this may be Martha's mother), her son, Joseph B (age 15, born in Indiana) and her daughter, Nancy J (age 13, born in Indiana).  Henry is listed as a farm laborer.

In 1900, Henry lived with a second wife, Elizabeth, in Bethlehem Township, Cass County, Indiana.  He's listed as a farmer.  Cannot read or write.

In 1910, Henry lived alone in Bethlehem Township, Cass County, Indiana.  Evidently, by this time he can read and write.

Our Caribbean Cruise Vacation - Part 1 Boston

We left Olympia on October 26, 2015 taking the Capital Aeroporter  (pick up time was 4:40 am) to Sea-Tac Airport. Traffic wasn't very cooperative - ended up taking detours.  Got to the airport about 7:30 am.  We ate breakfast then went on to our gate.  They were already boarding the plane.  Flight left on time and we arrived in Boston at 5:30p Eastern Time.  Contacted our shuttle and it picked us up at 7 pm and took us to our hotel.
Fall colors near our hotel.

We spent the 27th just wandering around the area our hotel was located, getting our bearings and planning the rest of our stay.

On the 28th, we caught the Beantown Trolley Tour at our hotel.  What a great tour!  It took us to the waterfront at Long Wharf where we caught our free harbor cruise.  Saw the Charlestown Navy Yard (home of the USS Constitution).  We also saw Fenway Park and a few other sites in Boston.

The 29th was another lazy day.  Our weather was wet most of the time.  On the 30th, we left our hotel and boarded our cruise ship.

October Birthdays & Anniversaries

A perfect topic for this week . . . We have several birthdays this month in my husband's family.  A niece, Megan Smith Collier and her two children plus two more grand-nephews from another niece.  Here's the kicker . . . 3 of them share the same day of the month.

But we are to talk about my ancestors . . .

The earliest ancestor to have a birthday in October is Eleanor De Bohun, daughter of Humphre de Bohun and Elizabeth Plantagent, and the wife of James Boteler.  She was born on the 17th of October 1304 and died the 7th of October 1363.  One of the records indicates that her marriage to James took place in October as well.  Her oldest, James Boteler, was also born in October at Kilkenny Castle on the 4th in 1331.  He died on the 18th of October 1382 at Knocktopher Castle.

Joseph Allein & Theodoshia Alleine were married on 4th Oct 1655 in Ditcheat, Somerset, England.  Joseph was born in 1633 in Devizes, Wiltshire, England to Toby Alleine.  Theodoshia was born in either 1616 or 1630 in Ditcheat, Somerset, England to Richard Alleine.  Their daughter, Isabella, married Rev. John Rutherford in the month of October.  Isabella was born in 1655 in Ditcheat, Somerset, England and died in 1740 in Ireland.  John Rutherford was born in 1653 in Morebattle, Roxburghshire, Scotland and died in County Down, Ireland.

Thornburg Mabbit was born on 28th Oct 1799 in Maryland.  Parents are unknown.  He died 9 March 1870 in Madison County, Indiana.  He married Susannah Smith 6th of June 1822 in Wayne County, Indiana.  I descend through their daughter, Elizabeth, who married Christopher Columbus Maynard.  I have conflicting information in regards to birth dates, etc.  I have the same dates for both Thornburg & Elizabeth.  One of them has to be wrong.

Moses Stanley and Ellen Lowe were married 29th of October 1822 in Patrick Co, Virginia.  Ellen was born 4th of May 1803 in Patrick Co, Virginia to Aaron Lowe & Sarah Frazier.  Moses was born 2 of May 1800 in Franklin Co, Virginia to William Stanley and Nancy Mullins.
